Hi beautiful! Welcome to my blog. This is where I will be sharing all kinds of goodies with you guys—from beauty tips and tricks, to business advice from fellow female entrepreneurs, and anything in between! I think it’s so cool when people within an industry are open to inspiring and learning from each other, especially among women. If there’s any topic you’d like me to cover or want to collaborate on, just send me a message on Instagram! I love hearing from you.
For this first post, I want to share a little bit about myself and the lessons that have led me to where I am today as a business owner in the beauty industry. It all started when I was young—I was OBSESSED with anything and everything beauty-related. Hair, makeup, nails… It’s safe to say that the passion was always there!
While a career in the beauty industry seems obvious now, I was actually on a different path when I first started college. I thought I would pursue psychology, but (thankfully) I quickly realized that I couldn’t ignore my calling. After taking a lash course and getting a makeup certification, I decided to quit school at the age of 21 and work full-time at a makeup studio. I knew in my heart that if I followed my passion, I couldn’t go wrong. The reward would be much greater than the risk.
After working at the studio for a while, I was let go from my job. I’ll be honest, it sucked! But instead of letting that bring me down, I turned it into an opportunity that ended up changing my life: I discovered a space for rent at a salon and I decided to just go for it! I wasn’t expecting or planning to start my own business at that point, but things just fell into place at the right time. It was another uncomfortable but very worthwhile step in my journey. I had no idea how to run a business, I was simply learning along the way. Looking back, this taught me that there is never a “wrong” decision—life is full of lessons and eventually you will end up where you need to be, as long as you follow your gut.
When I first launched my business, social media was KEY. It allowed me to establish my brand and build up a clientele. Fortunately, platforms like Instagram are the perfect place for beauty entrepreneurs to display their work. Of course, the number one thing you need is top quality service. That is a priority above all else. If the quality of your work isn’t there, no amount of cute pictures or branding will help you. Great customer service is also important. Yes, people want gorgeous lashes, but if the environment isn’t welcoming… well, their friends are going to hear about it! Branding is so much more than a pretty aesthetic. It’s aligning your values and reputation too. From the beginning, I’ve strived to create a trusted brand by offering consistent quality service, a safe and supportive community, as well as continuous education, and I believe that is what helped me stand out and grow as a business.
A few other important lessons I’ve learned over the years:
It is essential to invest in your business! Continuously seek ways to add value to your service through ongoing training, quality products, a great team, and powerful branding.
It’s so important to network within your industry, and especially treat each other as a community rather than competition. There’s room for all of us to be successful; we don’t need to do the whole cliché catty rivalry thing!
Simple, but don’t forget to have fun! It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stuff, but don’t let it overshadow your passion. This will allow you to attract positive opportunities and people that align with your vision.
What motivates me when things get tough?
I focus on finding projects that expand my knowledge and keep me excited about my business. Keep the passion alive by always learning!
How do I define success?
Financial freedom—working because you love what you do, not because you have to.
My advice for new entrepreneurs?
Try not to compare yourself to others! We’re all on our own path. Focus on your vision, no one else’s.
Where do I hope to be in 5-10 years?
At a point where my business can run successfully while I’m traveling the world!
